I was thinking the real "common" reason behind the so called common candidate of opposition(CCOO). It is the willingness to abolish executive presidency. Everybody wants to abolish it so they have get together to achieve the goal. Is that really executive presidency they want to get rid of or the person inside that post.
Wait. They all have that. What? They have hatred against Mahinda.
1. Sarath Fonseka (the CCOO) wanted to get power of commanding the 3 security forces. Rightly so Mahinda did not give these powers. He was sidelined and make ceremonious commander. He had problems with Gotabhaya and Mahinda. Now he sole motive is to take revenge.
2. Ranil Wickramasingha is playing a double game. He wants to destroy both Sarath and Mahinda. As long as Mahinda is there he can not win election. He wants to remove Mahinda but can not do by himself. So he brings Sarath. Ranil is not sure whether Sarath will fulfill the promises about abolishing executive presidency. He is not sure whether there will be a military government or not. But he can be happy because if Sarath wins Mahinda and Ranil in the same boat. If he looses he can be leader of the party and contest next presidential election.
3. JVP is angry because Mahinda divided the JVP. But it was JVP over-estimate their power. They should have contested 2006 local council with UPFA. But they thought it was JVP got the vote no PA. They could not defeat the budget because of Wimal. Now they are angry with Mahinda because he is supporting Nation Freedom Front. Mahinda also stealing patriotic votes.
4. Mangala supported Mahinda to win election in 2005 and he wanted to be prime-minister. But Mahinda rightly so did not appoint him as premier. But he gave him very important ministries. He try to abuse powers of foreign ministry and Mahinda removed him. So he is angry with Mahinda.
5. Hakeem is angry because Mahinda divided Muslim congress. Hakeem is loosing grounds among Muslims. He lost bargaining power. So he is angry.
6. Everybody knows why Mano Ganeshan is angry with Mahinda...
So it is obvious these people have only one common stuff. That is hatred towards Mahinda. So I would name Sarath Fonseka as "Common Hate Candidate".

you forgot a few other things the opposition have in common;
They want to stop the corruption
They want to stop the waste
They want to prevent a situation where the Rajapakse family will rule the country (while bleeding it dry) for 50 years
They want to make the presidency answerable to parliament
They want full implentation of constitution, empowering the Police and Judiciary to be independent
They want to make the cost of living bearable to the voters
They want to prevent future political "somersaults"
The common thread preventing all of the above is Mahinda Rajapakse

Correct me if I am wrong, Parliament can purge the executive presidency without the help of the current president as long as they can get 2/3 majority in parliament and a successful referendum, right?
Well said Mr. Gamarala, this is the message that must be delivered to the rural voter! Colombo will always back SF, it's time to educate the rural masses on the massive levels of corruption and nepotism of MR and his stooges!

Are you sure? Everybody said that before coming in to power. The most corruption occurred at JR's time. It was 17 years. In Candrika's time nothing happened but corruption and waste.
Corruption is in inside people's heart. From little child to the old man. That is established. So how they are going to do that. Everybody has said that earlier, We want to know how to do this.

Why now? The had enough time earlier. this system is 30 years old. Why just after finishing the war. They (JVP and UNP) don't have anything in common other than this.

I will agree with that. But this 17th amendment is not practical. Have to change how members are appointed.
